MADRID: Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s best action ensured Barcelona over Real Sociedad through a penalty this morning and then advanced to the Spanish Super Cup final without injured Lionel Messi.
Messi only watched the match when Ter Stegen did his best in Cordoba when he excelled in the penalty shootout and the real time ended 1-1.
Frenkie de Jong’s header equaled a penalty from Mikel Oyarzabal, who later failed to complete the wait, one of two saved by Ter Stegen before 21-year-old Riqui Puig scored the winning goal.
“I was not selected to take the kick but we needed another one and I volunteered,” Puig said.
Barca advance and will meet either Real Madrid or Athletic Bilbao in Sunday’s final, when Messi is expected to return to play despite coach Ronald Koeman worried about the player’s condition.
“We have to wait,” he said.
Koeman’s squad faces a big challenge in the hunt for the La Liga title but they are increasing when they go through nine games without losing besides having a chance to win a trophy so far.
