MADRID: Spain will face pressure in their group stage final against Slovakia on Thursday with Luis Enrique’s side having to seal victory to secure a place in the round of 16 at Euro 2020.
After the absence of Sergio Ramos, Enrique appeared to be overshadowed by questions about the lack of leadership character in the youth squad.
It was a good start against Sweden, but the game looked shaky in the second half with them missing out on a penalty kick, which saw Spain seem to lose the ability to play in a critical situation.
“The country has won the Euros and the World Cup, but in this squad, there is a lot of young energy,” said Spain defender Cesar Azpilicueta.
“There are some captains in our team, we know how to act and every player will give their best this Wednesday (Thursday).”
Captain Sergio Busquets is expected to be dropped after returning to the team following a COVID-19 test result against him being found to be negative.
Busquets have not been brought down in Spain’s first two games before.
“He’s an important player with the experience he has either on or off the field,” Azpilicueta said.
“He’s an incredible captain and we know the dominance he can bring in midfield. We’re so glad he’s back.”
